Farmers Ending Hunger

Project: Increase Commodity Donations by One Million Pounds

Year: 2012 Grant Amount: $10,000 Location: Salem, OR
About:

The mission of Farmers Ending Hunger (FEH) is to eliminate hunger in Oregon by increasing the amount of high quality food available to hungry local communities through a partnership of farmers, food processors, Oregon Food Bank and the public.  This grant will support the initiation of a farmer and rancher recruitment effort that will result in an additional one million pounds of high quality food products delivered to Oregon Food Bank.  Grower meetings will be held in three locations throughout the state concentrating on three identified commodities.  We have targeted onions in Malheur County, potatoes in the Columbia Gorge and vegetables in the Willamette Valley as high priority commodities.  We implemented a public awareness campaign in 2011 that has resulted in significant increases in donors and cash donations from both businesses and individuals.  The increased awareness has positioned us to now concentrate on expanding the number of farmers and ranchers who donate and this greatly increases the amount of products delivered to Oregon Food Bank.

Marion-Polk Food Share

Project: Marion-Polk Food Share Protein Burger: Fighting Hunger, Improving Nutrition, Rebuilding Lives

Year: 2012 Grant Amount: $20,000 Location: Salem, OR
About:

Protein is often the most expensive portion of an emergency food box.  The MPFS Protein burger has been tested and provides a suitable, inexpensive protein option, and is easy enough for a child to prepare.  Proposed Outcomes: 1) Produce 1 million burgers annually; 2) Distribute them to 35,000 low-income individuals monthly in Marion and Polk counties; and, 3) Provide skills/education to at least 20 incarcerated youth annually.  This grant was a start-up grant.  The original intention was to work with Oregon Youth Authority to provide an educational/vocational program at Hillcrest Youth Correctional Facility that allows youth to gain job skills and hope for their futures, while increasing the supply of affordable protein for emergency food distribution.  Although in the end Oregon Youth Authority was not involved, the program opened the vocational training for young people who are looking to secure jobs in the food services industry.  The Better Burger has been successful in more ways than they could ever have imagined at the outset of the project.  Marion-Polk Food Share has expanded their partner horizons, is distributing the burger widely and holds out the vision of involving incarcerated youth when feasible in the future.
